Arrive at East Croydon and the scale is obvious: high-rise towers, trams sliding through the centre, Boxpark under the flyover, and the Whitgift and Centrale shopping centres a few minutes’ walk. Croydon is a proper town — busy, urban, mid-regeneration — with quieter Victorian streets in South Croydon and Addiscombe further out.

Bromley trades on the opposite. The high street and the Glades do the shopping, but the pull is leafier: Church House Gardens, Victorian and Edwardian streets, and a more suburban, family rhythm that quietens in the evening.
